The Illinois Green Party has endorsed Senate Bill 1970, a new version of the proposed “LaSalle Street Tax.” This would place a tax of $1 or $2 on trades of options, futures, and other derivatives (average contract value: aprox. $285,000 per trade) at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Board Options Exchange, and Board of Trade.

If enacted, the tax would raise an estimated $12 billion a year, which would eliminate Illinois’ structural deficit and allow us to adequately fund our schools, higher education and vital services, while paying down the state’s public pension debt.

To help pass SB 1970, National Nurses United will be hosting multiple phonebanks this Spring. Phonebankers will reach out to individual Illinois residents and put them directly in touch with their elected representatives, allowing the people of Illinois to express their support for a budget that works for the state, and not the private, monied interests.

Sign up below if you are willing to help phonebank for SB 1970! Once we reach roughly a dozen signups in a geographic area, we’ll work with NNU to set up a phonebank that’s accessible to everyone. These calls are important — and they’re helping the Illinois Green Party lead the fight for an economically just Illinois.
