The following is the text of a talk Rich Whitney gave on September 27th, 2015 at the Rally for Campaign Nonviolence, in Carbondale.
As the State budget stalemate in Springfield drags on, I detect an unfortunate mix of complacency and exasperated resignation in the public mood. But my message today is that we literally cannot afford to be complacent. There is too much at stake, including human lives.
In Peoria on October 3, Illinois Green Party members will meet in Peoria for their statewide membership meeting. The meeting will be held at the Peoria Public Library. This meeting will include planning for the ILGP's 2016 spring convention, at which the ILGP will choose its delegates for the Green Party Presidential Nomination Convention. Save the date and make plans to attend!
The Green Party concluded its four-day Annual National Meeting yesterday. Much of the meeting, held at the University of Missouri in St. Louis, was livestreamed. Visit the GPUS website to check it out. www.gp.org ("Videos from the ANM")
Greens from across the country will gather in St. Louis this coming weekend when the Green Party holds its 2015 Annual National Meeting in St. Louis, Thursday through Sunday, on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The draft schedule includes on Friday night a Green Party Presidential Candidate Forum, featuring four declared Green Party Presidential candidates: Bill Kreml (former Illinois resident and still ILGP supporter), Kent Mesplay, Darryl Cherney, and Jill Stein. The schedule also include skill-building workshops, discussion panels, presentations (including one by our very own Rich Whitney), national delegate meetings and presentations, a campaign school, petitioning to help the Missouri Green Party get on the ballot, and a rally at the Ferguson Police Department. On June 22, Jill Stein announced her campaign as a Green Party candidate for the 2016 presidential race. www.jill2015.com
In a Democracy Now! exclusive, Dr. Stein outlined her platform and stated, "I have a people-powered campaign. I am running with the only national party that does not take corporate funding."
Dr. Stein is a physician and activist who was the Green Party's Presidential nominee in 2012.
The Green Party will officially choose its Presidential nominee at its national convention in 2016.
On June 3, 2015, the Latvian Parliament elected Green Party member Raimonds Vejonis to be its new President. Vejonis is the European Union's first Green Party leader of a nation-state.
CONGRATULATIONS to these Illinois Green Party members who won elections for public office on April 7:
Steve Alesch (Warrenville Park Board),
Peter Schwartzman (Galesburg City Council), and
Adrian Frost (Plano Library Board).
A big THANK YOU to these candidates, to the other Greens who ran for office in 2015, and to their supporters, for bringing Green values to the electoral forum.
Save the Date--April 18, 2015. The ILGP will gather in Champaign-Urbana for the Spring Membership Meeting. Watch for your next newsletter for the proposed agenda and other details. Thanks to the Prairie Greens for hosting us!
