LaSalle Street Tax Phonebank Session 1
A small tax on trades on the floors of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT - owned by the CME), and the separate Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE) could generate $10-12 billion in revenue to largely solve the Illinois budget crisis. The Illinois Legislature has the power to pass this tax without any change to the Constitution of Illinois. A bill in the Illinois Senate, SB-1970, provides for a $1.00 per transaction tax for agricultural products and a $2.00 per transaction tax for other products. The tax would be paid by the traders, not by the exchanges. The bill was introduced by Sen. Omar Aquino on February 10, 2017, but has not gone forward.
It is still possible to get an "issues hearing" in the Senate during the current term, even though it is no longer possible to pass the bill, which would increase the chances of getting the bill passed in the next term. This requires more Senators to support it.
The goal of the phone banking is to call the constituents of Senators who might be persuaded to get behind this landmark bill, and, if they agree, patch them through to their Senator's office to speak with a staffer or leave a message on the issue. The technology is simple to use from our point of view as the phonebanker. If you haven't done patch-through calling before, this is a resumé-building opportunity for you.
