ILGP Strategy Session
The Illinois Green Party (ILGP)'s Executive Committee and Coordinating Committee have scheduled a strategy session for this Saturday, December 3rd, from 9 am to 1 pm, at the ILGP's Wicker Park Office, which is located at 2201 West North Avenue, Chicago. All ILGP Members are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. (Because we are unsure of what the turnout will be, we ask that if you are able, please bring a chair for yourself and, if possible, one to share.)
Some of the topics that we anticipate covering are the following: Party goals, 2017 and 2018 elections, Chapters and Party-building, ILGP committees and committee activity, and fundraising. The agenda will be finalized at the start of the meeting.
Strategizing about the ILGP's future can begin here and now on the IllinoisGreensfocus Yahoo listserve, whether or not you will be able to attend the meeting on Saturday. If you are not already a listserve member, click "Join".
I can raise a couple of issues right now. First, we desperately need to revitalize our committees, many of which have been inactive/dormant for months as we concentrated on the statewide campaign. Beginning in 2002, the ILGP has maintained numerous Yahoo Group listserves, including this one and many for various ILGP Committees. Although we can, no doubt, point out many deficiencies in the Yahoo Group model, there is one very important aspect of the ILGP's Yahoo Groups that carries a lot of weight in my mind: each ILGP Yahoo Group includes archives for ILGP activity going back years, in some cases as many as 14 years. These archives include every email posted to the listserve and also a files section into which many important files have been uploaded. The archives are very valuable, because they can show how things have been done in the past and therefore they can help with current decision-making and can save an awful lot of time in preparing documents and adopting policies and procedures. Because ILGP leadership changes over time, these archives provide some help in maintaining continuity. (I am not suggesting that we always have to do things the same way.) One problem with moving to any new listserve would be that the emails in the Yahoo Groups cannot be forwarded. Right now, my sense is that we should continue to use the Yahoo Groups, but that issue is certainly worth discussing as part of our strategy for building the Green Party in Illinois.
Another issue is the question of whether or not to run a statewide campaign in 2018--that would be for Governor and any other state constitutional officers.
This is the time to build on the momentum we gained in the general election campaign. We have many new Members, and we are interested in your ideas about how best to go forward.
