The State Board of Elections voted unanimously today to certify the Green Party state slate to appear on the November ballot.
Rich Whitney of Carbondale officially will be challenging Rod Blagojevich and Judy Baar Topinka for the governor’s seat.
The Green Party had to collect 25,000 signatures in just 90 days – five times the number of signatures that their candidates had to collect – just to qualify to be on the ballot. They collected more than 39,000 signatures for an added safety cushion against a challenge objection.
Democrats filed objections to Whitney and the Green state slate appearing on the Nov. 7 election ballot. After nearly two-months of review, the State Board of Elections overturned the objection. The ballot will be certified Friday.
