Friends, please join us Sunday when Rich Whitney will speak at Third Unitarian Church in Chicago. Come early and you can have a pancake breakfast to support Austin scholarships.

October 23 Rich Whitney “In Defense of the Public Sector” — will respond to the growing political and media call for a diminished public sector. Whitney will address the arguments that “we can’t afford” to fund government and that the push toward the elimination or privatization of longstanding public functions is either necessary or desirable, examining both causes and effects of the attacks on the public sector.

Whitney is a civil rights attorney from Carbondale who was involved in nationwide legal battles to regulate tobacco advertising, on behalf of the public health community. He also is one of the founding members of the Illinois Green Party, and wrote a significant portion of the Party’s platform. He ran for governor of Illinois in 2006, garnering more than 360,000 votes, over 10% of the total vote and ran a second time in the more tightly contested 5-person race in 2010.

A longtime advocate for peace, civil rights and liberties, women’s rights, labor, the environment, single-payer health care and other progressive causes, Rich currently serves on the board of the IL Single Payer Coalition, now formatted as a non profit.

Laurel Lambert will facilitate.
